Helpful Tips

Orange County Engagement Photographer

As Orange County Wedding and Engagement Photographers, we love shooting outdoor photo sessions. There’s just something special about natural light and natural backgrounds that adds such dreamy vibes to the photos we’re capturing. There are some awesome outdoor engagement photography locations in Orange County, but one of our favorites is the Fullerton Arboretum. Located on Cal State Fullerton‘s campus, their botanical gardens are a great photoshoot location year-round. With a variety of different backdrops such as bamboo, cactus, large trees, beautiful fields of flowers, and a couple of small ponds, it’s a stunning natural outdoor engagement photography spot!

Eric and Johanna clearly have good taste when choosing gorgeous outdoor locations/venues, because their wedding venue is another one of our favorite places to shoot! These two are getting married at Serendipity Garden Weddings in October of this year! We can’t wait to capture more of their love!

Eric & Johanna’s Love Story:

Q. How & when did you first meet? Describe your thoughts / how you felt about each other. Was it love at first sight?

A. Johanna: I met Eric about seven years ago at a restaurant in Long Beach. We were out with mutual friends and I swear I knew then that he was someone special. See, if you really know Eric, you know that his jokes (although they may make you groan at times), his willingness to help EVERYONE, his kind soul, and his overall character, is beyond comparison; he truly is a unique individual.

We began dating shortly after meeting all thanks to my best friend Melissa who played matchmaker. Immediately, our interests were apparent -Disney dates, staying home bundled up, and fandoms (so many fandoms). But, what makes our relationship exceptional (I think), is the fact that we met at just the right moment. Let me explain, Eric and I grew up just a five-minute walk away from each other and attended ALL the same schools (yes- elementary through college), and yet, we met later in life. I believe that meeting later occurred for a special reason; I feel that we had experienced enough of life to be a bit more settled into who we were, however, young enough to continue to grow and shape each other. I have found that because of Eric, I have learned how to be more patient and understanding, and just an overall better and thoughtful person.

As I reflect, I have discovered that words cannot begin to express how grateful I am that God gave him to me at just the right moment- timing really is everything! I cannot wait to continue to grow and bring out the best in each other.

Q. What do you both do for work?

A. Johanna: Elementary Teacher
Eric: Theatre Technician

Q. GROOM: What was it that made you first start liking your bride-to-be?

A. The most striking thing about Johanna was her energetic personality, all the attention that she gave me, and how she always (and still does) make me feel special. She was a perfect match for me long before it clicked for me.

Q. BRIDE: What was it that made you first start liking your groom to be?

A. What made me first start liking Eric a lot were his corny jokes and the fact that we had a lot in common! It felt like we had already known each other for years and he was home. We could easily talk for hours and it was as though no time had passed.

Q. Tell us about your first date. What was going through your mind? Where did you go, what did you do?

A. Johanna: Our first date was at Disneyland/California Adventure and I just kept thinking why won’t he hold my hand! We had a blast just hanging out and chatting it up.
Eric: This is the first time she admitted this was our first date. She uses to say we just went as friends. I kept thinking how cute she was throughout the day. Looking back, hanging out came so easy and I had never had so much in common with someone else.

Q. What makes your relationship special? Tell us some things that you both value in your time together.

A. Johanna: What I believe makes our relationship special is the fact that we have a ridiculous amount in common. We both lived in the same neighborhood and had overlapping social circles even though we did not meet until much later. We grew up with Harry Potter and Disney; we knew all the same people, we did a lot of the same things. These are all reasons why hanging out together came so easily. Like Eric says, “we are puzzles pieces that just clicked!”

Q. Tell us about your proposal story! How / where did it all unfold? Who cried first? Were you surprised?

A. Johanna: Our proposal was a huge shock (to one of us at least)! It took place after my graduation ceremony for my Master’s Degree and in front of our family while taking pictures he just got down on one knee. He clearly went for the element of surprise and I was!
Eric: Johanna is a planner. She plans (everything) and I knew that I wanted to make sure this was not something that would draw suspicion. So many times, she planned and canceled things, so, it had to be something that I could rely on- she had to graduate! Ha! So, since our families would be there I had the opportunity to check many boxes: surprise her (because nothing gets by her), have our families there, and get to ask a pretty awesome girl to marry me. Check and check!

Q. What is one piece of advice you have for couples just beginning the wedding planning process? What have you enjoyed most about planning your wedding?

A. Johanna: I love planning events, but even so, I still want easy! Eric and I knew that with our busy schedules we needed a venue and people that included A LOT. Serendipity is that venue; it includes, ceremony and reception site, food, cake, flowers, tables, chairs, dinnerware, and a place to get ready- the list goes on. With that, he hired the Olivine Collective and Brit includes all the decor! If you are busy and want easy, find a venue and a planner that can include a lot for you! Yes, you pay a bit more, but planning is so much easier and less stressful.

Q. Anything else you want to add?

A. Although it has taken us almost 8 years to get to our wedding. We have had the opportunity to grow and change together creating a strong foundation in our relationship. We have supported and cheered each other on through schooling and career changes, and losses and gains. It is pretty exciting to get here and even though for so long it felt like such a long journey, our adventure together is just beginning and we cannot wait for what is next!

One of the things that we lost during the pandemic is togetherness.
