Helpful Tips

Angel and Jacob’s The Villa Del Sol engagement photography session in Fullerton was such a blast. We loved getting to capture their love for each other during their engagement session, and also at their wedding this past weekend at Casa Bonita in Fullerton! Angel and Jacob, we’re so excited for you and we wish you all the best!

We’re posting their gorgeous Villa Del Sol engagement photo session on the blog today in honor of their wedding day this past weekend, and we hope you enjoy reading their story as much as we loved getting to hear it!

How & when did you first meet? Describe your thoughts / how you felt about each other. Was it love at first sight?

Jacob: We first met each other at church. Angel has been going to that church all her life while I was invited to the youth group Bible Study my sophomore year in high school. I didn’t have any thoughts towards her at first. In fact for the longest time, I kept forgetting what her name was. What I did remember was that she gave the warmest and most welcoming hugs as she greeted everyone that was in attendance for those studies. So you can say for me personally it was not love at first sight.

Angel: As Jacob had mentioned, we met at my church’s youth bible study, it was in my youth pastor’s backyard to be exact. I have been involved in Calvary Chapel almost all my life, so I knew everyone there and I loved to meet new people. I remember when I first greeted Jacob, he introduced himself as “Hlucky“. I thought it was such a cool last name/nickname and definitely easy to remember. He was a sweet and quiet guy. But, Jacob wasn’t my “type” and I only liked him as a friend at the time. It may not have been love at first sight, but God knew what He was doing.

What do you both do for work?

Jacob: I own my own swimming pool business called Lucky’s Pool Service. I specialize in cleaning, repairing, and maintaining swimming pools. I have been doing this line of work for almost 8 years. I started out working with my grandfather who’s been in the business for over 40 years. He retired last August and gave all his clients to me and I have been doing it by myself ever since.

Angel: I work as a high school mathematics teacher at a small Academy in Anaheim. I have been teaching math for about 7 years and I absolutely love it! It’s radical.

GROOM: What was it that made you first start liking your bride-to-be?

It took me the longest time to admit that I liked Angel. After getting to know her more, we became really great friends. Her faith in God was evident in her life, unlike many other women I knew at the time. I had been in a few relationships but they didn’t last long. Honestly, her personality and her faith were everything I wanted for my “next relationship”. She had a solid foundation in her relationship with God, she was outgoing and exciting, her laugh was contagious, she had humor in almost everything, even the cheesiest puns. But I put her skin color and ethnicity in the way of taking the next step and asking her out. I was too focused on the appearance and background and not enough on who she was as a person. Growing up, I had stereotypes of different people and that mentality carried on even after high school. I’m so glad that God was working in me and through me because He was able to break down those walls I built up over the years.

BRIDE: What was it that made you first start liking your groom-to-be?

When I met Jacob, I would never have thought that he would be my future husband. At the time we met, I wasn’t looking for anyone and just wanted to focus on school and my relationship with God. I was going to Anaheim High School and Jacob was attending Loara High School, one of our rival schools. He played baseball like all the other guys that went to school with him that attended the bible study, so I never thought more of him than just a friend. For three years Jacob and I grew to be good friends and eventually best friends. I too let what I thought I wanted in a man (tall, Hispanic, not hairy, and sinless) get in the way of what God had for me. Before Jacob first came to my church, he came from difficult times and he, like all of us, needed a way out. He found his peace, comfort, and joy through Jesus Christ. I saw that as an opportunity to share and encourage him in Christ. I thought that was all God wanted to do. But, little did I know, God was molding and shaping Jacob to be that man of God and to ready us for our future marriage. I saw Jacob changing in a mighty way. His love for God grew and it showed to me. After a few years of being friends, I fell in love with Jacob. What I loved and still love about him is that he’s always loving, caring, patient when I’m not, gentle, loves to make me laugh, and puts God first. God completely changed me and Jacob. I am so excited about what God will do in the future.

Tell us about your first date. What was going through your mind? Where did you go, what did you do?

Our first date was actually the first time we hung out outside of the church. We were nervous and anxious about what it was going to be like outside of bible study. Our first date wasn’t by ourselves either. Angel’s brother Seth went with us on our first date. We went to a Casa Bonita hockey game (yes they have a hockey team) and it was fun. It was a short date, but it was a great opportunity to get to know each other!

What makes your relationship special? Tell us some things that you both value in your time together. (example: pushing each other to new limits, love to travel, huge comic book fans, foodies, etc.) What makes your relationship unique?

What makes our relationship special is that we can have fun no matter where we are and what we’re doing. For example, we make everyday tasks fun like cleaning, working, shopping, etc. Another example would be when Angel had a school assignment to go to the La Brea Tar Pits. This was something both she and I have never thought about going to. We made it fun and I helped her a lot with the assignment.

We’re also very outgoing people. We love to go to sporting events like baseball games, basketball games, and even motorcycle racing. Traveling is one of our favorite things. We plan out everything and try to do as much as possible for the days we are together. We’re also big foodies! We love to experiment and try different things together. When we go traveling, one of the first things we do in our planning is find out the best places to eat in that area. We even have a foodie list full of different food places that we plan on getting back to after the wedding.

Tell us about your proposal story! How / where did it all unfold? Who cried first? Were you surprised?

Every year we go out to San Diego for the motorcycle races that are held at Petco Park. The races are held at night, so during the day we will go and do other things around the area. We’ve been to Old Town, downtown, Sea World, and will always stop by Coronado Island. We first went to the USS Midway before we made our trip to Coronado. At Coronado, we always take pictures at the beach with downtown San Diego in the background. My brother and his fiancee came with us so we could all take pictures together like usual. I pointed the other way and told Angel that I saw a bulldog, so my brother could hand me the engagement ring. Angel loves bulldogs and I figured that would be a good distraction and it worked. Then she turned around and saw me on my knee and she knew right away what I was proposing and was really shocked. She teared up right away and of course, she said yes! We ended the night by going to the races. Half the time she was looking at her ring.

What is one piece of advice you have for couples just beginning the wedding planning process? What have you enjoyed most about planning your wedding?

The best advice that was given to us is to celebrate every time you did something for the wedding. There is a lot of planning and details that go into a wedding and the best thing to do is to celebrate by either going out to eat or picking up dessert and sharing it together. It doesn’t matter how small the detail is for the wedding. Even if you figured out what time a vendor is supposed to be at the venue or what flower you decided with the centerpiece. Celebrate that! It eases a lot of the stress of planning and will show both you and your partner how much you two have done together.

We love that advice! We’re all about celebrating the small things and the big things! The wedding planning process should be fun, and an opportunity to get to know your soon-to-be spouse even more.
