Orange County Professional Photographer

One of the best parts of being a professional photographer in Orange County, especially in the wedding industry, is meeting and getting to know all the people you cross paths with. One of the things I love about photographing engagement photo sessions is that the couple is generally more at ease with one another, as well as with the photographer and with their surroundings compared to that of their wedding day. It’s a time for them just to relax, be in love, to be in the moment with each other, and to get used to being in front of a camera. An engagement photo session allows the couple to really put their love for one another on display and I got this feeling in a recent shoot with Kayla and Michael at Treasure Island Beach.

Located in Laguna Beach, Treasure Island has some of the best all-around scenery out of all the beaches within the strip of Laguna beaches. There are many beach locations in Orange County, but we truly love the scenery that Treasure Island has to offer. One of the most requested photos that our couples ask for is one that has them standing on some of the greatest rock formations around. Rock formations is probably our favorite part about shooting engagement photo sessions at the beach as the rocks will bring so much personality to your photos.

At this particular photo session, you can really feel the love between these two during our time together at the beach. Their session was playful and loving, and they seemed very relaxed along the sandy shoreline and among the rock formations.

They say they instantly connected when they first met, and you can sense that connection while watching them during their session; very in tune with one another. It’s hard to imagine Michael being so nervous and shaky upon proposing to Kayla and trying to put that ring on her finger, but he pulled it off.

From starting off as good friends to a first date with sushi and a movie to a proposal on the Santa Monica Pier, (can you tell they like the beach atmosphere?) this amazing duo will be standing in front of family and friends in October 2020 at the beautiful Gerry Ranch in Camarillo to become husband and wife.

First impressions often make the world of difference between two people. Our first impression of Kayla and Michael is one of true love and happiness. The team at Three16 Photography was extremely excited to shoot your engagement photo session and would really like to thank Kayla and Michael for allowing us to be part of your special day. We wish you many years of love and happiness.

Check out their love story. We hope you enjoy it, and their photos, as much as we do.

Kayla and Michael’s Love Story

How &When did you first meet? Describe your thoughts and how you felt about each other. Was it love at first sight?

Back in 2010 his best friend and my best friend at the time were dating and our friend groups combined. We were both dating other people, but instantly we had a very strong connection. We became good friends and were very close for the first couple of years of our ‘relationship’. We were both secretly in love with each other, but never really had the guts to say it. Finally, one day he manned up and decided to ask her out for a date on Valentine’s day (2012). The rest is history

What do you both do for work?

Kayla is a Sign Language Interpreter and Michael was working in Texas for five months and just recently moved back to start his career as a lineman.

GROOM: What was it that made you first start liking your bride-to-be?

She was the cutest girl I had ever seen. She was so easy to talk to. I could approach her with anything at any time and I know she would be there for me. She always put a smile on my face, whenever we’d see each other it would be the highlight of my day. We would have fun no matter what we were doing when we were together. We clicked from the second we met and there was just something that told me that she was the girl I was going to spend the rest of my life with.

BRIDE: What was it that made you first start liking your groom-to-be?

HE WAS SOOOO HANDSOME. But other than that, I truly thought he was the funniest person on the planet. He had me laughing for hours every time we were together. We became such close friends so quickly it was hard not to fall in love with him, when I had already loved everything about him from the beginning.

Tell us about your first date. What was going through your mind and where did you go and what did you do?

Kayla: HAHA this is a story. Michael had the bright idea to fake get mad at me right before Valentine’s Day in 2012 when I totally thought we were going on a date for it. So, after a few days of not talking, and me being depressed that my first date with him wasn’t actually going to happen, I went to work with no expectation of doing anything, My two closest friends, who I found out later was in on the joke, visited me and tried to make me feel better about my failed plans. At the end of my shift, I was walking out to my car when suddenly Michael comes out of nowhere, grabs me from behind, and picks me up into the air. He had roses and told me to get ready, we were going to dinner. We then went to sushi and a movie, and I was just beyond ecstatic that it happened. I couldn’t even be mad at him. I was literally in heaven. Not the best way to go on a first date but hey, we were young. Hahaha.

Michael: It was a little nerve-racking for me. Not knowing how she was going to take the “joke” I planned. I was nervous while I was waiting to surprise her but once I did it, I felt a lot better and I knew it was going to be a great night.

What makes your relationship special? Tell us some things that you both value in your time together and what makes your relationship unique?

We love to travel together. We have been to numerous destinations together and we’ve had a blast at every single one of them. We both love Disneyland and we go there together all the time.

Michael: I cherish every second that I get to spend with her. It doesn’t matter what we’re doing or where we’re at. Being with her is the greatest thing I could ever ask for.

Kayla: I second that! We value all of our time together, especially now after having to live separately while he was away at school and working in Texas, time itself means more to us than ever now.

Tell us about your proposal story! How and Where did it all unfold? Were you surprised and tell us, who cried first?

Michael came home for the weekend from lineman school up in Northern CA to propose. It was a very rainy weekend in February, and his plans didn’t go accordingly as he wanted to do it outside. So, he took me to the Long Beach Aquarium for the day, and we had a lot of fun, despite getting soaked. On the way home I was so tired, my feet hurt from all the walking and my clothes and shoes were SOAKED. I just wanted to go home, but he was so adamant about going to the Santa Monica pier, and truthfully that was the last thing I wanted to do. But the sun came out, he made the executive decision that we were just going to go for a little bit. When we got there, it was clear and sunny, thankfully. We held hands walking to the end of the pier together, laughing together as usual. When we got to the end Michael got a little weird and I was confused. He was pacing around and kind of sweating (trying to find a good spot to do it, he was nervous and didn’t want other people hearing or seeing). Finally, he pulled me over and while looking into the ocean started saying the sweetest things to me and instantly, I knew what was happening. He was so sweet, and so cute and SO nervous. I had to grab the ring from him before he dropped it through the cracks in the pier, he was shaking soooo bad he couldn’t get it on. We both were all smiles and giggles, and it was the best moment ever. I was surprised at the moment, but I knew it was coming eventually, just not then!

What is one piece of advice you have for couples just beginning the wedding planning process? And what have you enjoyed most about planning your wedding?

ENJOY IT! Don’t sweat the small stuff. It’s going to be a beautiful night no matter what, the small details seem so important, but the important part is enjoying this process and evening together.

Anything else you want to add?

We fell in love young and wouldn’t have it any other way!

One of the things that we lost during the pandemic is togetherness.
